Dressing poorly can have its perks! And for reader Jenna, it came in the form of a $50 Burlington Coat Factory gift card. Jenna is the winner of our Dress for Success contest and she bravely shared her fashion faux pas to show that even the best of us make fashion mistakes.
As she explains it: "My biggest fashion blunder came early in my life! My mom and I were set to get a professional picture taken and as a treat she took me shopping to pick out the perfect outfit. Well, in my 12-year-old, 1990s mind I picked a neon-colored sweater with a tiger on it would be perfect. To top it off, the tiger's eyes were yellow gems. I wore it proudly beside my mom in the picture, and now, seeing as it is the only professional picture we have together, my fashion blunder still adorns our wall!"
And of course, Jenna's not the only one that makes fashion mistakes.
Reader Leslie: "Just today, being time efficient and environmentally friendly, I got dressed in the dark (or the dim light that comes through the window at 6:15 a.m.). I assumed that I pulled out a khaki pair of capris and a green top to wear to work. To my surprise (and horror) as I was pulling out of the driveway I realized I was wearing a pair of light green capris and a kelly green top. Without time to turn around, I will spend today not in casual summer fashion, but instead looking more like...a turtle."
Reader Maura: "I was a wide-eyed freshman loving college. Beer, boys, no parents - what's not to like? In order to attract said boys, my friends and I did a significant amount of primping before heading out for the night. This is evidence of why very few came our way. I thought about cropping out my friend to give her anonymity but decided to use it as proof that I was not alone in my misguided fashion taste.
Was I going to a barn dance? No. A hay ride? Nope. Horseback riding? Uh uh. Not only do we look ridiculous in our western wear, but I wasn't welI-versed in what a straightener was and really liked the under layer flip. My eyebrows are plucked into oblivion and I rimmed the inside of my eyelid with black pencil. Not pretty."
It's so fun to look back at our mistakes ... And hopefully learn from them! Also, remember that if you haven't worn an item during its season this year, it's time to donate it to someone who will wear it! A harder task to employ: whenever you buy something new, donate an item from your collection. Here are some charities that take clothing donations: Goodwill, The Salvation Army, Amvets and Dress for Success.
Work it, ladies, no matter if you're a trendsetter or a fashion mistake today!
xoxo,
Lisa Marie
