Layoffs are tough. The threat of them, the gloom that looms over entire offices, companies and as it seems, our nation, have a life-altering impact. Often times, however, a grim circumstance also can provide blessings in disguise, and LaidOffCamp is coming to Chicago to promote and encourage laid-off individuals to keep their heads up while they continue moving forward.
The free, one-day camp is touring the nation to offer networking, discussions and a positive environment for the unemployed and nontraditionally employed (freelancers, entrepreneurs and startups), and will be held from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday at Loyola University's Water Tower campus, 25 E. Pearson, Kasbeer Hall, 15th floor.
"The event was designed to inspire and empower laid-off individuals, and give them an opportunity to not only learn from others but also share their own experiences," said Lance Macon, organizer of LaidOffCamp Chicago.
The camp, which is described as an "un-conference," was started in January by Chris Hutchins. The first camp was held in San Francisco and since then, it has spread to Los Angeles, New York City, Dallas, Miami and now, sweet home Chicago.
At the camp, participants can network and gain advice on a number of topics, including searching for jobs, improving resumes and fine-tuning interview skills. Camps in other cities have included panels, demonstrations, workshops and discussions on building a personal brand, budgeting and freelancing.
"We hope to inspire the attendees to do what they can to make their own opportunities, get people to feel better about themselves, and of course network," Macon said.
To attend the event, you must register, as space is limited.
Go on, reinvent yourself - free career advice and networking will be a nice way to connect and set foot on a new path.
xoxo,
Lisa Marie
